Falletta is a class act. She seems really thoughtful and collaborative. The SSO wouldn't know what to do with such a conductor, having had years of the opposite.

Very nice review. After having seen a documentary on Hilary Hahn on the Ovation channel, I have to agree with your assessments of her demeanor and careful attention to the music. She is definitely a wonderful musician.

Hi Beth,

I've found that a lot of people don't even know the facts and many are interested in what is happening elsewhere.

What's the point of a rehash of these widely reported facts without at least one interesting observation about their significance?

Ludovic Morlot was here this season in Chicago, and he did an excellent job. It all depends on repertoire. See my review here: http://gatheringnote.com/2008/11/16/let-sleeping-dogs-lie/

I agree with your top 5 picks for guest conductors. Looks pretty exciting.

I heard a broadcast of Roberto Abbado in Mahler from Boston a few years back, and it was stunning. Reviews I've seen of other performances have been generally positive as well. Sinaisky is actually outstanding in English repertoire (Elgar & RVW) and I look forward to his concert as well. Spano's is probably the one I'm most excited about - I've loved John Adams' Harmonielehre since I first heard it in high school, and with Schwarz' apparent distaste for his music, I'm glad he's letting someone else bring it in. It makes up for the RVW 5th Previn bailed on this season. Also Dutilleux is a nice surprise, and Bernstein sending things out. Nothing as risky as "Mass" in Minneapolis this season, but still different.

Clearly, I'm looking forward to next season's lineup as a whole. Let's hope it lives up to its promise!
